It can be a challenge to maintain a vibrant and thriving lawn, but not with Zeon Zoysia. It’s a highly adaptable warm-season turfgrass that can sustain itself during scorching hot summers and freezing cold winters, as we experience in Texas. Let’s see what makes Zeon Zoysia grass different and why to choose it for your next project.

What is Zeon Zoysia Grass?

Zeon Zoysia is a fine-bladed, soft-texture grass that’s a medium dark green color. It’s considered a true “barefoot lawn grass,” as it’s extremely plush, enjoyable to walk on, and foot-traffic friendly. What makes it specifically appealing to Texas residents is that it can thrive in full sun, recover quickly from drought due to its extensive root system, and has excellent shade tolerance. It is the most shade-tolerant grass of any variety and requires only 3 hours of direct sunlight! Zeon zoysia grows slower than St. Augustine and Bermuda grass so you won’t be mowing as often. It also has low fertilizer requirements to maintain its optimal look, so you’ll have a beautiful lawn that requires lower inputs.

What makes Zeon Zoysia different?

Since you have many options when choosing the right grass for your lawn or outdoor space, we’re outlining the top five differentiators of Zeon Zoysia so you can decide if it’s best suited for your space.

High Shade Tolerance

While Texas is known for its hot, sunny weather, some areas of the turfgrass might still experience partial shade due to trees or buildings. Zeon Zoysia performs remarkably well in shade conditions compared to other warm-season grasses, ensuring a consistent and lush turf even in areas with limited sunlight. It can handle full sun and requires as little as 3 hours of direct sunlight. When homeowners, golf courses, and sports fields know shade is an issue Zeon Zoysia should be considered. It thrives where other grasses fail.

Excellent Drought Tolerance

One of the primary reasons why Zeon Zoysia grass stands out in Texas is its exceptional drought tolerance. Texas can get dry and humid, which can be particularly challenging for maintaining a healthy lawn. Zeon Zoysia has an extensive root system that allows it to extract water from deeper soil layers, making it more resilient during periods of limited rainfall or water restrictions. This unique feature significantly reduces water consumption and ensures the lawn remains green and vibrant even in the harshest conditions.

Soft, Pleasant Texture

One of the most appealing characteristics of Zeon Zoysia grass is its soft and luxurious texture and medium dark green color. Unlike other grass types that can be coarse or uncomfortable to walk on barefoot, Zeon Zoysia feels pleasant and inviting. This feature makes it an ideal choice for families with children and pets who want a lawn that’s not only beautiful but also enjoyable to use.

Lower Maintenance

As one of the lowest maintenance grass types, you’ll enjoy less mowing, less watering, less fertilization, fewer herbicides, and fewer fungicides than many other grass types. Zeon saves time on tedious lawn care because it grows slower than even St. Augustine grass so you won’t be pulling your mower out as often and dealing with unsightly thatch. It’s naturally more drought resistant because the roots of Zeon Zoysia sod penetrate deep in the soil and absorb moisture and nutrients which help keep it green and hydrated.

Like all Zoysia grasses, Zeon requires less fertilization when compared to St. Augustine and Bermuda grasses to maintain its desired look. Zeon boasts natural weed control since its dense growth habit helps to suppress them, which means fewer herbicides. If you’ve had St. Augustine, you must be familiar with the dreaded fall brown patch if you forget to apply timely fungicide applications. Luckily, Zeon Zoysia doesn’t get brown patches so you can worry less throughout the seasons. In all, Zeon requires fewer inputs meaning a healthier environment for everyone.

Stays Green Under Extreme Heat

Texans are no strangers to scorching temperatures, especially during the peak of summer. A Zeon Zoysia lawn has demonstrated exceptional heat resistance, maintaining its color and vitality even in extreme periods of heat. Other grass varieties may struggle and turn brown under these harsh conditions, but Zeon Zoysia retains its lush green appearance, providing a beautiful lawn throughout the year.

Zeon Zoysia grass has earned its reputation as a superior grass variety, even over St. Augustine and Bermuda grass. It great for Texas lawns with its exceptional shade tolerance, drought tolerance, heat resistance, and low maintenance requirements. The dark green tones and soft texture of this grass provide homeowners with a beautiful and enduring lawn that can withstand the climate challenges we face in Texas. Investing in Zeon Zoysia grass not only enhances the value of your property but also grants you the pleasure of a year-round luxurious, vibrant, and inviting home lawns for years to come.

FAQ's

Zeon is the best type of grass if you have a shaded area. However, if you currently have St. Augustine grass in your shaded yard and are struggling to maintain it, we suggest Palmetto St. Augustine. While Palmetto is not as shade tolerant as Zeon, it has the most shade tolerance of any St. Augustine grass.
Zeon Zoysia and Emerald Zoysia are both top-of-the-line, fine-bladed Zoysia varieties. Zeon requires less direct sunlight at 3 hours versus 5 hours for Emerald. The colors are slightly different, too. Zeon is a medium to dark green while Emerald is darker in color. Zeon grows faster making it ideal for higher-traffic areas and Emerald grows slower and requires less frequent mowing.
Zeon does great in full sun. Although it has excellent shade-tolerant qualities, it does not need shade to grow and thrive.
Zeon Zoysia will spread 16 – 24 inches per year depending on how heavily it’s fertilized. Zeon Zoysia is considered a durable and “invasive” type of grass because it grows by rhizomes and stolons. Stolons are above-ground stems that pop up on the surface of the soil. Rhizomes are stems that grow underground and shoot new roots downward into the soil.
Zeon is a warm-season turfgrass and should be planted in the warm-season zone to the transition line to cool-season grasses. It’s very versatile in that it handles all soil conditions and soil types. It can withstand the extreme heat of the south but also the frigid, cold temperatures of the north.
There are 450 square feet of Zeon Zoysia per pallet.
Zeon is comparatively priced compared to other Zoysia grasses. It is priced higher than St. Augustine and Bermuda grasses because it has a slower growth rate. This slow growth means it takes longer to produce at the farm, costing more in time and inputs.
A regular rotary mower will work just fine if you’re keeping your mower height at a normal 2-3 inches. Zeon can be mowed as short as you would like but you’ll need a reel mower to get a sharp, precise cut.

This place is awesome! I had an emergency project come up and within a day I received the materials and the crew knocked it out very fast. The attention to detail was not one that I expected when purchasing dirt and mulch, but they went above and beyond to make everything look perfect. I will be using them again and highly recommend them for any dirt/mulch needs.
