When it comes to choosing the right grass for your lawn, you should really consider Palisades Zoysia. It’s a high-quality turfgrass that has unparalleled shade tolerance, drought tolerance, and can thrive in warm, humid environments, making it an excellent option for Texans. Let’s break down the top reasons why Palisades is our #1 selling Zoysia grass.

What is Palisades Zoysia Grass?

Palisades Zoysia is our most popular medium bladed Zoysia grass. It’s a turfgrass that was developed by Texas A&M University to specifically withstand shade and minimum water intake, which is why it’s great for drought-prone areas that receive some shade throughout the day. For optimal thickness, it needs a minimum of 5-6 hours of sunlight so keep that in mind when deciding if Palisades Zoysia is right for your lawn. Since it has the high shade tolerance of a St Augustine grass as well as the drought tolerance of Bermuda grass, it’s a highly sought after option for Texas lawns. You’ll love that this grass has a slow growth rate and requires less mowing and less fertilizer to maintain its optimal color and keep healthy and alive. It’s versatile in that you can mow as low as one-half inch but two to three inches is typical for residential use. Its distinguished dark green color and medium blades form a high-density turf with a thick, carpet-like appearance. It’s a very visually appealing option for homeowners and landscape professionals alike. Proven to be an excellent low-maintenance choice, Palisades Zoysia is a popular choice for residential and high-end commercial areas because of its reduced mowing requirements, less fertilizer requirements, resistance to brown patches, insects, and can choke out weeds.

What makes Palisades Zoysia different?

With plentiful turf options out there, we want to highlight what makes Palisades Zoysia stand out among its competition so you can make the best decision for your lawn.

Superior Drought Tolerance

One of the most significant advantages of Palisades Zoysia grass over other turfgrass varieties is its exceptional low water use requirements. In fact, some studies have shown it to survive up to 15 weeks without water! As a warm-season grass, it’s evolved to withstand long periods of heat and limited water, making it a great choice for regions with hot and arid climates like Texas. During periods of drought, Palisades Zoysia can go dormant and turn a light brown color, but it bounces right back to its lush green state when water is reintroduced. This quality reduces the need for excessive watering, contributing to lower utility bills.

Striking Dark Green Color

Palisades Zoysia has been specifically bred to exhibit its striking dark green color and coarse texture. Through careful development, grass breeders have managed to create the impressive deep green and blue undertones that will have your lawn the envy of the neighborhood. Palisades Zoysia has darker tones compared to rival medium-bladed Zoysias such as Empire Zoysia and Jamur Zoysia.

Excellent Heat & Cold Tolerance

Contrary to many warm-season grasses, Palisades Zoysia exhibits impressive cold hardiness. It’s unique in that it can be planted in very hot climates but also can handle the cold weather extremely well. It has a larger geographic area where it can be planted and thrive, including all over the Texas gulf coast to southern Kansas. It remains green longer into the fall and has a faster spring green-up compared to other warm-season varieties, such as Bermuda grass. This resilience to cold temperatures gives homeowners the opportunity to enjoy a beautiful lawn for longer periods of the year.

Lower Maintenance

One of the primary reasons homeowners opt for Palisades Zoysia grass is because of how low maintenance it is. Once established, this turfgrass requires less mowing, fertilization, and overall care than many other grass types. Its slow growth rate contributes to the need to mow less frequently, which makes homeowners happy. Palisades Zoysia has lower fertilizer requirement compared to St. Augustine and much lower requirements than Bermuda grass so it takes a lot less to keep it beautiful and healthy. With its natural resistance to certain pests and diseases you can spend more time enjoying your lawn vs treating it with chemicals.

Terrific Traffic Tolerance

Palisades Zoysia boasts remarkable traffic tolerance for a slow growing grass. Its durability and resilience make it a perfect choice for lawns that experience typical residential use. Whether it’s from playful kids, active pets, or outdoor gatherings, this grass variety can handle foot traffic while maintaining its lovely appearance. It’s not as suitable for sports fields or golf courses, but is an ideal option for homeowners that love to spend time in the backyard. With a dense growth pattern and robust root system, it can recover quickly from traffic and damage, ensuring a consistently beautiful lawn even with frequent use.

Exceptional Shade Tolerance

Palisades Zoysia has exceptional shade tolerance, like St. Augustine, and requires a minimum 5-6 hours of sunlight for optimal thickness. This grass variety stands out in that it can thrive in places with partial sunlight, where other grasses will struggle. It’s a great choice for warm-weather regions that receive less sunlight in the winter.

Most Popular Medium-Bladed Zoysia Grass

Palisades Zoysia is our #1 selling, most popular medium-bladed grass for a reason! It exhibits better characteristics over other medium-bladed Zoysias, such as Empire Zoysia and Jamur Zoysia, by a long shot. FAQ's

YES!! Palisades Zoysia sod has many great characteristics. To be quick, it has the shade tolerance of St. Augustine grass along with the drought tolerance of Bermuda grass. Further, it’s slow growing, needs less fertilizer, has good insect tolerance and can be planted anywhere in the warm season grass zone. Its cold tolerance makes it the ideal medium bladed zoysia for Texas versus other medium bladed zoysias such as Empire and Jamur Zoysia that don’t have good cold tolerance.

Palisades and Empire are both medium blade-broad textured zoysia grasses but that’s where the similarities end. Palisades Zoysia was developed by Texas A&M University with the original zoysia japonica strand coming from Japan. Empire Zoysia was a natural hybrid zoysia grass that came from Brazil. Like its origins from Brazil, Empire Zoysia thrives in hot and humid climates. In fact, it’s the most planted medium bladed zoysia in Florida. However, Empire Zoysia had poor cold tolerance and shouldn’t be planted anywhere that gets a frost as it performs poorly. Palisades Zoysia is more versatile in the areas it can be planted and thrives in the heat and humidity and can withstand cold freezing winters. In the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program(NTEP), Palisades rated the best medium broad blade zoysia grass in all categories. Palisades is the most planted medium bladed zoysia in Texas and exhibits better characteristics versus other medium bladed zoysia grasses.

Palisades Zoysia has excellent winter hardiness and can be planted anywhere in the warm season grass zone. It will persist in northern regions such as Kansas, Missouri and Illinois just to give an example.

Palisades Zoysia will spread 16 – 24 inches per year depending on how heavily it’s fertilized. Palisades Zoysia is considered a durable and “invasive” type of grass because it grows by rhizomes and stolons. Stolons are above-ground stems that pop up on the surface of the soil. Rhizomes are stems that grow underground and shoot new roots downward into the soil. In simple terms this means Palisades Zoysia has great staying power once established when compared to grasses that only spread by stolons, such as St. Augustine grasses.

There are 450 square feet on a pallet of Palisades Zoysia.
