What is Emerald Zoysia Grass?
Emerald is our favorite fine-bladed Zoysia grass. It’s an extremely dense turf that boasts a beautiful dark green color, which gives it its name. Emerald Zoysia was created as a hybrid between Zoysia Japonica for its cold tolerance and Zoysia Tenuifolia for its fine texture. It released in 1955 by the Georgia Agricultural Experiment Station and the USDA as one of the first Zoysia grasses on the market. Almost 70 years later and Emerald Zoysia is still a top choice for home lawns!
It’s the slowest-growing Zoysia grass and only needs to be mowed every 7-10 days in the growing season. Its slow growth habit is, without a doubt, one of its best features. However, slow growing grass doesn’t recover from wear and tear as quickly and will take longer to regrow versus other Zoysia, Bermuda, or St. Augustine grasses. We wouldn’t recommend Emerald Zoysia for a busy football or soccer field as it simply wouldn’t recover as fast. It’s ideal for home lawns or spaces that get moderate walking and usage.
Other appealing characteristics of Emerald Zoysia include cold tolerance, drought tolerance, shade tolerance, and low fertilizer requirements. It thrives in full sun but is the second most shade-tolerant grass, only after Zeon Zoysia. (See our “Best Grass for Shade in Texas” blog post) Once established, Emerald Zoysia requires less water than other grasses. A deep root structure gives it the ability to absorb nutrients, retain water, and thrive in hot and cold environments. Emerald Zoysia is low maintenance and very suitable for our Texas climate.
Since Emerald Zoysia forms such a dense turf grass, it chokes out weeds to create a beautiful and luxurious green carpet look for your lawn. The blade density is much higher than that of other grasses, giving it a very thick, rug-like appearance. The compacted grass blades act as a natural weed deterrent which, in turn, lessens chemical treatments. With its low maintenance and moderate wear tolerance, it’s a prime choice for a home lawn to be enjoyed with kids and pets.
