Let’s explore what makes Raleigh St. Augustine grass stand out as a top choice for Texans.

What is Raleigh St. Augustine Grass?

Raleigh St. Augustine is a warm season grass that features a medium blade, coarse texture, and a dark green color when fertilized properly. It was Introduced in 1980 by North Carolina State University as a cold-hardy St. Augustine cultivar. Its ability to withstand the scorching temperatures we endure while also holding up in excellent condition against extreme freezes makes it the top choice for Texas. Raleigh St. Augustine also handles high humidity well, making it ideal for the unpredictable weather we experience. Its ability to thrive in full sun but also tolerate up to a half-day of shade make Raleigh St. Augustine very versatile. It has a fairly aggressive growth and recovery making it the perfect grass for pets and kids to play on.

While not known for its drought tolerance, this grass flourishes in areas with irrigation or adequate rainfall. Raleigh St. Augustine forms a dense turfgrass that chokes out weeds to create a beautiful and luxurious green carpet look for your lawn. It’s a great option for commercial projects and residential use as it’s easy to care for and proves to be the best overall price.

What makes Raleigh St. Augustine different?

Check out these key features to see how Raleigh St. Augustine grass is ideal for Texans.

Thrives in Full Sun

Raleigh St. Augustine prefers and thrives in full sun, which is one of the reasons it’s the most used grass in Texas. If your lawn gets lots of sunlight throughout the day, Raleigh St. Augustine should be at the top of your list of grasses to choose from. It can tolerates shade well, but sure does love those rays.

Cold Hardy

Raleigh St. Augustine is the best choice for Texas because it’s the most cold-hardy of the St. Augustine varieties. It can withstand hard freezes and Texas winters with ease. Compared to Floratam St. Augustine, which performed very poorly in freezing temperatures when it was introduced to Texas, Raleigh can withstand the extreme temperature drops we experience throughout the state. Raleigh St. Augustine is by far more popular in Texas, apart from Floratam St. Augustine which is still used occasionally along the coastline.

Shade Tolerant

St. Augustine grass is shade tolerant and can handle filtered sunlight much better than Bermuda grasses which need 100% sunlight. If you have a shaded lawn with tall trees where the sun just peeks through thin branches or if you have overhead coverings, this grass will do well in your space. You can rest assured that Raleigh St. Augustine can tolerate up to half a day of shade with ease.

Chokes Out Weeds

Raleigh St. Augustine grass develops dense ground coverage to choke and crowd out weeds, especially compared to Bermuda and Zoysia types. The thick texture combined with its quick growing rate keeps weeds to a minimum without too much effort.

For over 30 years and counting Raleigh St. Augustine has been the most used grass in Texas. It’s well-priced, fairly forgiving, easy to take care of, adaptable to many climates and soil types, and looks appealing on most lawns. FAQ's

There is 450 sqft on a pallet of grass. This does differ slightly state to state so it’s always a good idea to confirm pallet square footage before you order your grass.

Like all turfgrasses, Raleigh St. Augustine is not insect resistant. Anything lush and green is going to attract insects because it’s not natural in the environment and it’s going to attract insects to feed and lay eggs. Preventative insecticide applications is the best way to keep insects at bay, especially for chinch bugs which can do a lot of damage to St. Augustine grasses.

The best time to plant Raleigh St. Augustine grass in Texas is early spring through early summer, from about mid-March to late June.

Thatch maintenance is a natural part of St. Augustine lawn care since it naturally grows so thick. A thin layer (anything from a half inch or more) is fine, but more than that can deter from nutrients penetrating the root zone. Dethatching and regular lawn aeration can assist with breaking up thatch.

Brown patch is a fungus caused by cool nights and excess moisture. It’s the most common in the fall. The best way to prevent brown patch is to switch off your irrigation when we transition from summer to fall temperatures. If you have areas where brown patch appears every year it may be necessary to pre-treat with a fungicide for prevention.

We recommend mowing Raleigh St. Augustine grass at least every 5 days, once a week at minimum. Set the mowing height at 2.5-3 inches and 3-3.5 inches in shady lawns.

Raleigh St. Augustine typically requires about 5-6 hours of direct sunlight to fully thrive.

This place is awesome! I had an emergency project come up and within a day I received the materials and the crew knocked it out very fast. The attention to detail was not one that I expected when purchasing dirt and mulch, but they went above and beyond to make everything look perfect. I will be using them again and highly recommend them for any dirt/mulch needs.
