Celebration Bermuda is not a hybrid turfgrass, but an improved variety turfgrass of common bermudagrass. An improved variety grass means there’s an area where the common bermuda is demonstrating noticeably better characteristics than the rest. This area is taken and then tested, researched and eventually mass produced if it continues to exhibit superior traits the researchers and developers are looking for.

No. Celebration Bermuda should be planted in full sun, wide open spaces like all bermuda’s. Celebration will tolerate up to 1/4 day of shade, but any more than that a Zoysia or St. Augustine should be considered because they have much higher shade tolerance.

Yes. Like all warm-season turfgrasses, Celebration will go dormant(brown) with the first hard freeze of the year. Dormancy is natural protection for warm-season grasses to survive winter.

To start, Tiftuf Bermuda is a hybrid Bermudagrass while Celebration Bermuda is an improved variety of Common Bermudagrass. Tiftuf has a slightly smaller blade(1.7mm) while Celebration has a little wider blade(2.8mm). While both bermuda’s have very good drought tolerance, Tiftuf will stay greener longer when compared to Celebration in the same drought conditions. Celebration does better versus Tiftuf in areas that won’t have irrigation or very limited irrigation. While neither grass is a good choice for shade, Tiftuf has more shade tolerance compared to Celebration. Lastly, Tiftuf is a dark green color while Celebration is a dark blue-green color.

Celebration Bermuda will spread 16 – 24 inches per year depending on how heavily it’s fertilized. Celebration is considered a durable and “invasive” type of grass because it grows by rhizomes and stolons. Stolons are tough runners that pop up on the surface of the soil. Rhizomes are stems that grow underground and shoot new roots downward into the soil. In simple terms this means Celebration has great staying power once established when compared to grasses that only spread by stolons, such as St. Augustine grasses.

If you’re keeping your mowing height at 2-3 inches a normal, rotary mower is fine. Just be sure to keep your blades extra sharp. If your mowing height is going to be below 2 inches a reel mower is a must.

Celebration does not have good weed control when compared to St. Augustine and Zoysia grasses. Timely pre-emergent herbicide applications with Barricade pre-emergent will ensure your Celebration lawn is weed free year around.
